Historic First: Union Budget 2026 to Be Presented on a Sunday, Confirms Om Birla

In a historic departure from convention, the Union Budget for 2026 will be presented on a Sunday. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla confirmed on Monday that Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will table the budget in Parliament on February 1, 2026, at 11 a.m.

This marks the first time in recent memory that the nation's most significant financial document will be released on a Sunday.

Sitharaman, who has already presented seven budgets since assuming office, will be delivering her eighth consecutive budget. Her stewardship of the country's finances has become a defining feature of the Narendra Modi government, and the upcoming presentation is expected to draw keen attention from policymakers, industry leaders, and citizens alike.

The announcement follows Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju's declaration last week regarding the schedule for the Budget Session of Parliament. Rijiju revealed that the session will run in two phases between January 28 and April 2, 2026. The first phase will conclude on February 13, while the second will resume on March 9.

A Rare Sunday Occasion

Budgets in India have traditionally been presented on weekdays, with February 28 long serving as the customary date until the Modi government shifted it to February 1 in 2017. The only comparable instance occurred in 1999, when the budget was advanced by a day because February 28 fell on a Sunday.

This year's decision, however, is unique in that the government has chosen to proceed with the presentation on the weekend itself rather than rescheduling.

Speaker Birla defended the move, emphasizing the responsibility of elected representatives to serve without regard to weekends or holidays. "Elected representatives are public servants and they are expected to work on all days without taking a break," he remarked, underscoring the symbolic importance of maintaining the designated date despite it coinciding with a Sunday.

Ordinarily, Parliament does not convene on Saturdays or Sundays except under special circumstances. The decision to hold the budget presentation on February 1 reflects the government's commitment to consistency and continuity in fiscal planning.

Structure of the Budget Session

The Budget Session, the first parliamentary session of the calendar year, traditionally begins with the President's address to a joint sitting of both Houses. President Droupadi Murmu has approved the summoning of Parliament for this year's session, which will span over two months. Following the President's speech, legislative and financial business will be taken up, culminating in the presentation of the Union Budget.

The Budget Session is a cornerstone of India's parliamentary calendar, followed by the Monsoon Session in July-August and the Winter Session in November-December.
