Global Tech Layoffs 2025: AI and Automation Lead to Over 1 Lakh Job Cuts Across 218 Companies

More than one lakh employees have lost their jobs across 218 tech companies so far in 2025, marking one of the largest layoff waves in recent years.

From Silicon Valley to Bengaluru, global technology giants are restructuring operations and cutting staff as they pivot toward artificial intelligence, automation, and profitability following years of rapid pandemic-era growth.

The data compiled by Layoffs.fyi highlights how the tech industry is undergoing a deep transformation. Companies are investing heavily in AI and cloud infrastructure while trimming traditional roles that no longer fit their evolving business models.

Intel Leads with Largest Workforce Reduction

Intel recorded the biggest single layoff of the year, slashing 24,000 positions, or roughly 22% of its global workforce.

The job cuts affected facilities in the U.S., Germany, Costa Rica, and Poland as the chipmaker faces tough competition from Nvidia and AMD.

Intel said the decision was part of a large-scale restructuring to improve efficiency and focus on core AI and semiconductor innovations.

Amazon, Microsoft, and Google Join the Layoff Trend

Amazon has also made major cuts, eliminating around 14,000 corporate jobs across its operations, HR, and cloud units.

CEO Andy Jassy described the decision as part of efforts to "run Amazon like the world's largest startup," aiming to streamline operations and redirect resources toward AI-driven initiatives.

Microsoft laid off about 9,000 employees this year in several rounds, primarily from product and software divisions. The company stated the restructuring would help it focus on developing advanced AI tools and strengthening its cloud computing services.

Meanwhile, Google and Meta have trimmed roles in their Android, hardware, and AI teams to remove overlaps and control costs. Oracle followed suit, cutting hundreds of jobs in its U.S. offices while doubling down on AI-powered cloud investments.

Impact Felt in India's IT Sector

The global slowdown is also hitting India's tech industry. Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), the country's largest software exporter, recorded its steepest-ever quarterly drop in staff, cutting around 20,000 jobs in the July to September 2025 quarter.

The company attributed the job cuts to AI-driven restructuring efforts and a growing gap between existing skill sets and new technology demands, making it the firm's first significant workforce reduction since 2022.

Other Indian IT majors have also slowed hiring as automation and AI integration reduce the demand for mid-level professionals.

Industry analysts note that while layoffs are widespread, firms are increasingly prioritising reskilling and redeploying talent into emerging areas such as AI development, data analytics, and machine learning operations.
