Budget 2025: India To Create 5 Indigenous Small Nuclear Reactors By 2033
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, in her eighth consecutive budget presentation on February 1, 2025, unveiled a landmark initiative to boost India's energy sector. Introducing a nuclear energy mission with an allocation of INR 20,000 crore, Sitharaman outlined a comprehensive plan aimed at advancing the country's research and development capabilities. This mission, according to an inc42 report, will focus on the creation of at least five indigenously developed small modular reactors (SMRs) by 2033, paving the way for a more sustainable and secure energy future.
India's commitment to expanding its nuclear energy capacity was highlighted, with the Finance Minister emphasizing the need to develop a minimum of 100 GW of nuclear energy by 2047. This ambitious goal is expected to play a pivotal role in meeting the nation's growing energy demands while reducing dependency on fossil fuels, which is in line with the government's focus on achieving a greener economy.

The introduction of small modular reactors, which are considered more flexible and cost-effective compared to traditional nuclear reactors, marks a significant shift towards more scalable energy solutions. These reactors are seen as a viable option to address regional energy disparities and provide an efficient way to decentralise energy production, ultimately bolstering India's energy security. Additionally, the development of SMRs will likely accelerate India's self-reliance in energy technology, with homegrown innovations driving the country's energy infrastructure.
This announcement is a milestone in India's pursuit of sustainable energy and energy security. By focusing on nuclear power, the government is not only positioning India as a global leader in energy innovation but also aligning with global sustainability goals. With this move, India takes a significant step forward in addressing its energy challenges while setting a clear path for a future powered by clean, efficient, and locally developed energy solutions.
