What’s The Connection Between Darshan And Hindalga Jail?
Kannada actor Darshan Thoogudeepa's ongoing controversy has raised questions about a potential transfer from Bengaluru's Parappana Agrahara Central Jail to Hindalga Jail in Belagavi. The speculation stems from concerns about Darshan's treatment behind bars and the high-profile nature of Hindalga Jail.

Leaked photos and videos showing Darshan enjoying special privileges have raised eyebrows and led to calls for stricter oversight. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has ordered authorities to transfer Darshan to a different prison. As a result, talks are underway regarding his potential relocation to Hindalga Jail, Belagavi.
Why Hindalga Jail?
The Hindalga jail, one of the oldest jails in the state, is known for housing notorious inmates and having a reputation for stringent security measures. Its reputation for handling high-profile cases and perceived higher security might be factors influencing this speculation.
Hindalga Jail, with its century-old history, currently has 15 vacant "Andheri Cells" (dark cells). The prison authorities are said to have collected details about these cells, and an announcement regarding Darshan's potential transfer is anticipated by Monday evening.
Hindalga jail has a capacity to house 1,400 prisoners. It has been historically significant, hosting freedom fighters, prominent politicians, and even international criminals like Charles Shobraj.
The prison currently holds 27 inmates facing capital punishment, including notorious criminals associated with Veerappan's gang, Dandupalya dacoits, and suspected SIMI activists.
Official Stance
The Karnataka Home Department has not confirmed any plans to transfer Darshan to Hindalga Jail. However, the discussions are fueled by ongoing scrutiny and public demand for better management of high-profile inmates.
Hindalga Jail gained nationwide attention after a prisoner, Prashant Mogaveer, released a video exposing various irregularities and security lapses within the facility. The jail was also in the spotlight earlier when two inmates used smuggled cell phones to make threatening calls to Union Minister Nitin Gadkari's office, demanding a hefty ransom.
One of the convicts involved in that incident, Jayesh Pujari, has been serving a life sentence since 2013 for a murder in Mangaluru. Pujari, who later converted to Islam and adopted the name Shakeer Ahmed, claimed to be associated with terrorist Basiruddin Noorahmed, also known as Afsar Pasha.
What's Next?
The situation remains fluid as investigations into Darshan's current treatment continue. Whether the authorities will decide to move him to Hindalga Jail or implement other measures to address the issues at Parappana Agrahara will be closely watched.
