Arvind Kejriwal becomes chief minister of Delhi
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal became the chief minister of Delhi on December 28. It was one of the highest points in the year as the party, formed just a year ago, came to power after taking on powerful parties like the Congress and BJP.

Maha Kumbh Mela in Allahabad
The Maha Kumbh Mela, which is the largest religious gathering in the world and takes place after every 12 years, was held in Allahabad in Uttar Pradesh from January 14 to March 10.

Thirty-six people were killed while 39 were injured after a stampede took place at the Allahabad railway station in Uttar Pradesh on February 10, during the Maha Kumbh Mela.

Hyderabad blasts
Seventeen persons were killed while 119 were injured after two bombs exploded in the city of Hyderabad on February 21. The Indian Mujahideen was suspected to be behind the terror attack.

Bangalore blast
Sixteen persons were injured after a bomb went off near the BJP's Karnataka office in Bangalore on April 17.

Sachin Tendulkar retires from international cricket
Ace cricketer Sachin Tendulkar played his 200th and final test match at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on November 16. He played his last test match against the West Indies.

Narendra Modi anointed as the BJP's PM candidate for 2014 LS polls
Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi was anointed as the BJP's prime ministerial candidate for the 2014 Lok Sabha elections on September 13.

Uttarakhand disaster
Presumably 5,700 people were killed and an unprecedented loss of property took place after the hilly state of Uttarakhand witnessed a devastating natural calamity following a cloudburst in June.

Mumbai Indians lift their maiden IPL trophy
The Mumbai Indians beat the Chennai Super Kings at the Eden Gardens by 23 runs to lift their maiden Indian Premier League trophy on May 26.

Legendary singer Manna Dey passes away
Legendary singer Manna Dey passed away in a hospital in Bangalore on October 24. Dey was 94 and was ailing.

Farooq Sheikh dies of heart attack
Veteran actor Farooq Sheikh passed away in Dubai on December 27. He was 65.

Bodh Gaya bombings
Ten bombs exploded in and around the Mahabodhi Temple complex in Bodh Gaya on July 7. Five persons, including two Buddhist monks, were injured in the blasts.

Maoists attack Congress convoy in Chhattisgarh
Maoists carried out a deadly attack on a convoy of Congress leaders in Darbha Valley in Bastar in Chhattisgarh on May 25. Twenty-seven persons were killed, including former state minister and organiser of Salwa Judum Mahendra Karma, state Congress chief Nand Kumar Patel. Former Union minister Vidya Charan Shukla, who was badly injured, died later in hospital.

JD(U) leaves NDA after 17 years
The Janta Dal (United) led by Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar left the National Democratic Alliance on June 16, ending a 17-year-old alliance. The JD(U) said it left the alliance for it could not compromise with its "basic principles".

Children die after consuming poisoned mid-day meal in school
Twenty-three children died while many fell ill after consuming poisoned mid-day meal in a school near Chhapra in Bihar on July 16.

Ace film director Rituparno Ghosh dies at 49
Award-winning Bengali film director Rituparno Ghosh died at his residence in Kolkata on May 30. He was 49. He was suffering from health-related complications.

Indian cricket team wins ICC Champions Trophy
The Indian men's cricket team led by Mahendra Singh Dhoni won the final edition of ICC Champions Trophy by beating hosts England in Edgbaston by five runs on June 23. India were unbeaten throughout the tournament.

Building collapses in Thane, 74 killed
Seventy-four people, including 18 children, were killed after a building collapsed in Thane in Maharashtra on April 4. Over 60 people were injured in the incident.

Actor Pran passes away
'Bad man of Bollywood' Pran passed away in Mumbai on July 12. The man, who had acted over 360 films in a career spanning over six decades, was 93. He was awarded Dadasaheb Phalke Award a few months ahead of his death.

Supreme Court of India gives negative verdict on homosexuality
On December 11, the Supreme Court struck down a 2009 decision of the Delhi High Court and restored the 1860 statute - Section 377 - of the Indian Penal Code that doesn't allow sex 'against the natural order'.

Lalu Prasad convicted in fodder scam
Rashtriya Janta Dal (RJD) chief and former chief minister of Bihar Lalu Prasad was convicted in the 16-year-old fodder scam on September 30 and was given five years imprisonment. Prasad, however, got bail on December 13.

Tehelka Editor-in-Chief Tarun Tejpal lands in trouble
Editor-in-Chief of Tehelka magazine Tarun Tejpal landed in trouble after being accused of sexually mistreating one of his junior colleagues at an event in Goa. He was arrested on November 30.

Muzaffarnagar riots
Starting on August 27, a series of communal clashes occurred in Muzaffarnagar in Uttar Pradesh. Nearly 50 people were killed in the riots. The riots also gave way to political fight between various parties.

Last king of Mysore passes away
Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wadiyar, the 60-year-old prince of Mysore died on December 10 after suffering from a cardiac arrest. His death meant the formal end of one of the oldest dynasties of the country since he had no children.

Rahul Gandhi becomes the Congress vice-president
Rahul Gandhi, son of Congress president Sonia Gandhi, was appointed as the party's vice-president at a Jaipur enclave on January 19.

Shakuntala Devi dies
'Human Computer' Shakuntala Devi died in Bangalore on April 21. She was 83.
