Veteran Kannada Actress Leelavathi Passes Away At 85

Veteran Kannada Actress Leelavathi passed away on Friday at the age of 85. She had been battling age-related illness and was hospitalized in recent days.

The actress' final rites are set to take place at her estate in Nelamangala, according to reports. Today evening, her mortal remains will be placed for public viewing at her farmhouse.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed anguish at the death of eminent Kannada actor Leelavathi (85) and described her as a true cinema icon who graced the silver screen with her versatile acting in numerous films.

''Saddened to hear about the passing of the legendary Kannada film personality Leelavathi Ji. A true icon of cinema, she graced the silver screen with her versatile acting in numerous films. Her diverse roles and remarkable talent will always be remembered and admired. My thoughts are with her family and admirers. Om Shanti,'' Modi said on X.

Leelavathi's career spanned over six decades, with her appearing in approximately 600 films across Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam languages. She was recognized for her versatile acting and received numerous accolades, including the prestigious Dr. Rajkumar Award for Lifetime Achievement in 1999-2000 and an honorary doctorate from Tumkur University in 2008.

Born in Belthangady, Leelavathi developed a passion for theater at a young age. Before fully committing to acting, she also managed household responsibilities. She made her film debut in 1949 and later became a prominent actress in Kannada cinema.

Leelavathi is survived by her son, Vinod Raj, who is also a renowned actor in the Kannada film industry.

Leelavathi made her debut in Shankar Singh's Nagakannike in 1949 and later entered the Kannada film industry. She acted as the companion of Subbayya Naidu in the theatrical organization of Mahalinga Bhagavatar and performed in several plays. She also played the role of Sakhi in Bhakta Prahlada staged by Subbayya Naidu. She acted in small roles in many movies.

Her first film as a lead actress was Mangalya Yoga. Her first film with Dr. Rajkumar was Ranadheera Kanteerava.
