Vande Bharat Sleeper Train To Launch By January-End, Speed Limited To 130 km/h
Vande Bharat Sleeper Train Launch: India's rail travel is set to reach a new milestone with the debut of the first Vande Bharat train equipped with sleeper coaches, expected by the end of January. This addition marks a significant step toward enhancing comfort and convenience for long-distance passengers.
Modifications and Speed Limitations

The sleeper version of the Vande Bharat train brings improved passenger amenities but faces limitations in speed. According to the Research Design and Standards Organisation (RDSO), modifications such as sleeper berths and increased water storage capacity have added weight to the train. Consequently, the train's maximum speed is capped at 130 km/h, falling short of the earlier design goal of 180 km/h.
Officials from the Perambur Integral Coach Factory (ICF) explained that the added weight impacts speed performance. Before entering regular service, the sleeper train must pass rigorous testing, including sandbag simulations to replicate passenger weight. The Railway Safety Commissioner will oversee trial runs at maximum speed, granting final approval only after the train meets all safety and operational standards.
Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) manufactured the sleeper coaches and delivered the first set to ICF on October 4, 2024. This follows a 2023 contract between ICF and BEML for the production of 10 Vande Bharat trains, each consisting of 16 coaches, as part of India's push to modernize its rail network.
Despite speed constraints, the Vande Bharat sleeper train is expected to transform overnight rail journeys, offering a unique blend of comfort and efficiency. This development lays the foundation for future enhancements in the Vande Bharat series, signaling a promising era for Indian Railways.
