Bengaluru, Aug 22: A day after Karnataka's Home Minister decided to give Amnesty International a clean chit, the social media is asking a question- Did the fact that Oshanie Fernandes, daughter of Congress leader Oscar Fernandes working with Amnesty International have anything to do with the decision?

There were scores of tweets accusing the Karnataka government of giving Amnesty a clean chit due to this connection. A case of sedition had been filed against Amnesty International after anti-national and Azad Kashmir slogans were allegedly raised at an event at Bengaluru a few days back.

Oscar Fernandes connection to Amnesty?

The statement by Dr G Parameshwara, the home minister of Karnataka has not gone down too well with the BJP. There have been widespread protests over the issue and the police in Bengaluru too say that a sedition charge will not stand.

On the social media, one tweet by Priti Gandhi @MrsGandhi read, " Boooom!!! Meet Amnesty International Advocacy Officer Oshanie Fernandes, Congress leader Oscar Fernandes' daughter. Priti Gandhi is a National Executive Member-BJP Mahila Morcha.

The tweet was backed up with photographs of Oshanie's profile. Her profile reads, Advocacy Officer, Amnesty International 20133- Present (3years), Bengaluru Area, India.

The BJP's Ananth Kumar and Arun Jaitley too had raised the issue of giving Amnesty a clean chit. Both leaders had said that there is no room for anti national sloganeering in the country.

Brijesh Kalappa, Congress spokesperson and legal advisor to the government of Karnataka while reacting to the report said that Oshanie Fernandes had quit Amnesty International long back in 2014. She has updated her profile ever since.

"I know the family well and hence I happen to know the facts. I thought it fit to comment on it when it was brought to my attention. Hence It would be incorrect to connect her to this issue," Kalappa also said.
