5 Children In Shivamogga Test Positive For HMPV Virus: Health Experts Calm Concerns

In Shivamogga, the detection of the HMPV virus in five children has raised awareness about this respiratory infection, which was previously identified in two cases in Bengaluru. This revelation marks a significant moment, as it is the first known occurrence of this virus in the area, predating its identification in Bengaluru.

Notably, the affected children, aged between one and two years, have since recovered and been discharged from the hospital, according to a report from the private hospital administration to the district authorities.

Dr. Dhananjay Sarji, a pediatrician in Shivamogga, confirmed that the virus, known as Human metapneumovirus, was identified through laboratory tests conducted on swab samples taken due to suspicions of COVID-19. Since October and November, there has been an ongoing treatment for children showing symptoms of respiratory infections, indicating the virus's presence from around that time.

"The virus is common and comes and goes. There is no need to panic," Dr. Dhananjay Sarji mentioned, alleviating concerns about the virus's impact. He further explained that the tests were conducted on children admitted to his hospital, with five of them testing positive during September and October. However, he reassured that all the children have recovered without any complications.

It's noteworthy that the virus doesn't only affect children in Shivamogga but has also been identified in other parts of India, including two cases in Nagpur. The health department has assured that there is no cause for alarm regarding this virus in India, as it does not pose a severe threat like COVID-19 and has not led to any severe outcomes.

The Karnataka governemnt have released guidelines in response to the HMPV virus, advising the public to maintain hygiene, wash hands regularly with soap or sanitizer, cover the nose and mouth while sneezing or coughing, and avoid crowded places. They also emphasized the importance of seeking immediate medical attention if any symptoms of the virus appear.
