Silicon Valley Takes The Crown For The Wrong Reasons; Bengaluru Overtakes Delhi In Private Cars
India's Silicon Valley, Bengaluru, may be renowned for its tech wizardry and delectable dosas, but it's also gained unwanted notoriety for its traffic nightmares. Recent data suggests the city has dethroned Delhi, the national capital, as the king of private cars, and the consequences are clogging the streets and slowing down lives.
As per recent data from the Delhi Statistical Handbook 2023, Bengaluru has outstripped the national capital, emerging as the Indian city with the highest number of private cars.

According to TOI's report, Delhi boasts a total of 79.5 lakh vehicles, including 20.7 lakh private cars. In recent times, Delhi's transport department has opted to deregister and scrap vehicles surpassing the stipulated age, citing escalating pollution levels in the city.
The primary factors contributing to recurrent traffic congestion in Bengaluru are rain and festivals, elevating the city to the second position in the global traffic congestion ranking for 2022. Commuters in Bengaluru required an average of 20 minutes and 10 seconds to cover a mere 10 km distance, with an average speed of 18 kmph. These findings were compiled by the Dutch location technology specialist TomTom, revealing the profound impact of traffic snarls on the daily routines of Bengaluru residents.
Noteworthy is the fact that in 2022, Bengaluru residents spent a considerable amount of time navigating through traffic, squandering a total of 260 hours, equivalent to 10 days of driving, with 134 hours attributed to delays caused by congestion. These statistics underscore the significant repercussions of traffic congestion on the daily lives of the city's inhabitants.
