Shiggaon By Election: Congress Picks Yasir Khan Pathan, While Bharat Bommai Files for BJP

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has officially approved Yasir Ahmed Khan Pathan as the party's candidate for the Shiggaon Constituency in the upcoming Legislative Assembly bypolls in Karnataka.

In a press release from the All India Congress Committee, it was confirmed that "The Congress President, Mallikarjun Kharge, has approved the candidature of Yasir Ahmed Khan Pathan for the ensuing bye-election to the Legislative Assembly of Karnataka from the 83-Shiggaon Constituency."

Earlier on the same day, Bharat Bommai, the son of former Karnataka Chief Minister and BJP Lok Sabha MP Basavaraj Bommai, submitted his nomination as the BJP's candidate for the Shiggaon Assembly bypoll.

The Congress party has already announced its candidates for two other seats in the Karnataka bypolls. CP Yogeshwara, who joined Congress after resigning from the BJP as an MLC, will contest from Channapatna. Additionally, E Annapurna, wife of Bellary MP E Tukaram, has been nominated for the Sandur seat.

Meanwhile, the NDA has fielded Nikhil Kumaraswamy, JD(S) State Youth Unit President and son of Union Minister and Karnataka JD(S) chief H.D. Kumaraswamy, for the Channapatna bypoll. These bypolls are being held due to the resignations of H.D. Kumaraswamy from Channapatna, Basavaraj Bommai from Shiggaon, and Tukaram from Sandur, all of whom won seats in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

The byelections in Karnataka are scheduled for November 13, coinciding with elections in 47 other assembly constituencies and the Wayanad parliamentary seat in Kerala, according to the Election Commission of India (ECI). Vote counting will occur on November 23.
