Satellite Township Ring Road In Bengaluru: Will The December Deadline For STRR Be Met?

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari announced on Thursday said that the 280.8 km Satellite Township Ring Road (STRR) project in Bengaluru, which is being implemented by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) under the Bharatmala Pariyojana is a 4-6 lane access-controlled expressway in Karnataka. He announced that he will try to complete the ₹17,000-crore ring road project by December. The project aims to decongest the city and has been delayed several times.

In a lighter moment, Gadkari jokingly told the gathering that he does not keep any letters from state governments or elected representatives pending. "But for a few, I have responded to all the letters," he said. He also met with Karnataka Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister recently to discuss several road projects and offered to provide ₹2 lakh crore for the projects if they could ensure land acquisition and environmental clearances are obtained.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate an 80 km section of the Bengaluru Satellite Town Ring Road (STRR) by December. This includes two sections: the 42-kilometre (km) Dobbaspet-Doddaballapur bypass section of NH-648 and the 37.6-km Doddaballapur bypass-Hoskote section of NH-648.

The Bangalore Satellite Town Ring Road is a proposed 280.836 kilometres of road network that will connect 12 satellite towns around Bangalore. The 12 satellite towns are: Dobbaspet, Doddaballapur, Devanahalli, Sulibele, Hoskote, Sarjapur, Attibele, Anekal, Tattekere, Kanakapura, Ramanagara, Hosur and Magadi.

Part of the Bharatmala Pariyojna Lot-3, this greenfield expressway will serve as a bypass around Bengaluru city. It is being constructed in three parallel phases, involving the construction of NH-948A and realignment of the existing NH-648 (old NH-207).

The expressway will pass through the eco-sensitive zone (ESZ) of Bannerghatta National Park (BNP) from Km 95.525 to Km 138.000 and includes an 8.1 km elevated highway through its core with a 28.50m ROW.
