Saroja Devi No More: Kannada Cinema Legend Donates Eyes After Death, Fulfills Final Wish

Renowned Kannada actress B. Saroja Devi, fondly known as Abhinaya Saraswati, passed away today at her residence in Malleswaram, Bengaluru. She was 87. Even in death, the iconic actress continued to inspire generations by donating her eyes to Narayana Nethralaya, reinforcing her lifelong belief that “eyes are among the most vital human senses.”

The medical team from Narayana Nethralaya arrived at her home to complete the donation process, fulfilling her final wish. This heartfelt gesture aligns with a noble tradition in the Kannada film industry—earlier upheld by Dr. Rajkumar and Puneeth Rajkumar, both of whom donated their eyes and helped restore vision to the visually impaired.

A Lasting Legacy of Light

Saroja Devi's choice to donate her eyes has already begun inspiring many. Her act is especially significant in a state where awareness about organ and eye donation continues to grow.

When actor Puneeth Rajkumar passed away, his eyes were used to give sight to two people, a moment that sparked a statewide movement for eye donation. Saroja Devi’s family confirmed that her decision was made years ago, and she wanted to leave the world by giving the gift of sight.

Career Remembered

With memorable performances in films like Kittur Chennamma, Babruvahana, Annathangi, and Bhagyavantharu, Saroja Devi reigned as one of the biggest stars in Kannada and South Indian cinema. She was known as the “Kittur Rani Chennamma” of Indian cinema, admired for her strong roles and expressive acting.

Her career spanned over 200 films across Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi, making her one of the most respected figures in Indian film history.

Grief and Tributes Pour In

Following the news of her death, tributes began pouring in from across the film industry and political circles. Karnataka Chief Minister expressed deep sorrow, stating that “the world of art has lost a luminous star.” Actors, directors, and politicians visited her residence to pay their final respects.

Her body will be kept for public viewing before the final rites are conducted with full state honours.
