Sameer MD’s Sowjanya Video Part 1 Blocked on YouTube, Creator Responds

Kannada YouTuber and content creator Sameer MD has claimed that Part 1 of his viral video series on the rape and murder of 17-year-old student Sowjanya has been blocked on YouTube following a court order. Taking to Instagram, he informed his followers that the video is no longer accessible, and when users try to view it, YouTube displays the message: "This video is unavailable."

Viral Video That Sparked Renewed Interest

The blocked video was uploaded on February 27 on Sameer's Dhootha ("Messenger") YouTube channel. It quickly gained traction, amassing over 19 million views-an exceptionally high number in Karnataka's digital space. The content revisited the 2012 rape and murder of Sowjanya in Dharmasthala, a well-known temple town in Dakshina Kannada district.

The 39-minute, well-crafted video went viral for its detailed account of the crime and flawed investigation, enhanced by Sameer's sharp narration and AI-generated graphics.

While Sameer MD did not explicitly name any individuals, his video hinted at the involvement of influential figures connected to Dharmasthala's political and economic landscape, controlled by a hereditary temple management family. His allegations reignited public interest in the case, leading to widespread discussions and demands for justice.

Recently, Sameer also uploaded Part 2 video on Sowjanya case which has so far garnered 3.5 million views in just two days.

The 2012 Case That Shook Karnataka

Sowjanya, a second-year Pre-University student at Sri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara College, went missing on October 9, 2012. Her body was found the next day near the Nethravathi river, with her hands tied to a tree using her shawl. The brutal crime led to public outrage and protests.

Despite the uproar, the only accused in the case, Santhosh Rao, was acquitted by a Bengaluru Sessions Court on June 16, 2023, citing a lack of evidence. The verdict left many unanswered questions, fueling further speculation.

Meanwhile, ADGP (Law and Order) R Hitendra has written to all SPs and Police Commissioners, highlighting the failure of social media monitoring cells in reporting these videos to senior officers. He emphasized that such content could influence public opinion, either for or against the issue, potentially impacting law and order.

He has instructed officers to ensure that social media monitoring cells remain vigilant and promptly provide updates on any actions taken regarding the matter.

Legal Action Against the Video

Following the viral spread of the video, it now appears that legal intervention has led to its removal from YouTube. Sameer MD has not disclosed details about the court order, but the move suggests that authorities or other parties involved in the case may have sought its blocking.

With the first part of the video now inaccessible, it remains to be seen whether Sameer MD will challenge the removal or release further content on the matter. Meanwhile, public discussions around the Sowjanya case continue to gain momentum, keeping the tragic incident in focus more than a decade after it occurred.
