RIP SM Krishna: Karnataka Announces 3 Days Of Mourning For Former CM

The Karnataka government has announced a three-day mourning period following the death of former Chief Minister SM Krishna, who passed away at the age of 92 after battling prolonged illness. During this time, no functions or celebrations will take place, and his last rites will be performed with full state honours.

SM Krishna passed away early on Tuesday morning at his residence in Bengaluru, according to his family. He had been suffering from health issues for some time.

SM Krishna

Prime Minister Narendra Modi honored the memory of the late leader, remarking, "Shri SM Krishna Ji was an extraordinary leader, respected by individuals across all sectors of society. He dedicated himself to enhancing the lives of others."

Born on May 1, 1932, in Somanahalli, Mandya district, Krishna embarked on his political journey in 1962 by securing the Maddur assembly seat as an Independent candidate. He subsequently joined the Praja Socialist Party before becoming a prominent figure in the Congress. After nearly five decades with the Congress, he switched to the BJP in March 2017, citing a lack of clarity within the party regarding the importance of mass leadership.

In January 2017, Krishna announced his resignation from the Congress, expressing discontent with the party's direction. He also revealed his retirement from active politics in January 2023, citing his age as the primary reason.

Krishna served as the 16th Chief Minister of Karnataka from October 11, 1999, to May 28, 2004, and played a pivotal role in shaping the state's development. He also held significant positions as the Governor of Maharashtra and the External Affairs Minister during the UPA government from 2009 to 2012.
