Cricket Set to Return to Chinnaswamy? Bengaluru Police Signal Conditional Nod After Safety Review

Cricket may soon return to Bengaluru's M Chinnaswamy Stadium, with city police indicating that matches could be allowed under strict conditions once ongoing safety upgrades are completed and verified.

Senior police officials have conveyed that the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) is close to receiving conditional clearance, subject to full compliance with enhanced security and crowd-management norms. The move signals a cautious reopening of the venue following last year's fatal incident outside the stadium.

On Tuesday, Bengaluru City Police Commissioner Seemant Kumar Singh conducted a comprehensive review of the stadium's preparedness at the KSCA headquarters. The meeting focused on the progress of infrastructure changes, emergency response mechanisms and overall crowd-control planning at the high-profile cricket venue.

The review was attended by Central Division DCP Akshay, KSCA president Venkatesh Prasad, and senior representatives from the city police, public works department and the cricket association. Officials examined the ongoing modification works and evaluated whether the measures aligned with the revised safety standards now required for large public events.

The renewed scrutiny follows the June 2025 stampede outside Chinnaswamy Stadium, which occurred during celebrations after Royal Challengers Bengaluru's IPL victory. The incident resulted in the deaths of 11 people and injuries to several others, raising serious concerns over event planning and crowd control in the city's central business district.

A subsequent judicial inquiry led by Justice Michael D Cunha highlighted multiple shortcomings, including flaws in stadium access design, inadequate emergency planning and unsafe crowd movement patterns. The findings prompted the state government to impose tighter regulations on approvals for major sporting and public events at the venue.

In recent weeks, KSCA officials have intensified engagement with the state leadership, holding discussions with the Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Minister, Home Minister and senior police officers. The association has sought permission to resume cricket while assuring authorities that all safety-related recommendations would be implemented within a defined timeframe.

As part of the corrective measures, entry and exit gates at Chinnaswamy Stadium are being widened to facilitate smoother movement of spectators and to ensure clear access for emergency services, including ambulances and fire tenders. Internal pathways within the stadium complex are also being restructured to reduce congestion during peak movement hours.

Fire safety systems at the venue are undergoing upgrades, and officials confirmed that mandatory approvals from the fire and emergency services department are being pursued in parallel. These clearances are expected to play a crucial role in determining whether matches can be hosted in the near future.

While police have not issued a formal order yet, officials indicated that conditional permission is likely once all requirements are met and verified on the ground. Any approval is expected to come with strict conditions, including enhanced police deployment, regulated entry timings and tighter monitoring of crowd density.

For Bengaluru's cricket fans, the developments mark a significant step towards the return of matches at one of India's most iconic stadiums. However, authorities have made it clear that the resumption of cricket will depend entirely on safety compliance, with public security taking precedence over scheduling considerations.
