Rahul Gandhi Gets Bail In Defamation Case

Special Court in Bengaluru on Friday granted bail to Rahul Gandhi in a defamation case filed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over allegedly defamatory advertisements published in mainstream newspapers before the 2023 state assembly election.

On the security of DK Suresh, bail has been granted to Rahul Gandhi. The matter posted to 30th July for the next hearing.

The case was filed in June 2023 by the BJP, which accused the Karnataka Congress of making false and reckless allegations against the BJP government in the advertisements. The ads, titled "Corruption rate card," accused the BJP's Basavaraj Bommai government of being a "40 per cent Commission Sarkara" (government).

The complaint alleged that the advertisements were issued by the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee through its president, DK Shivakumar, and then Leader of the Opposition in the legislative assembly, Siddaramaiah. Rahul Gandhi shared one of these ads on his social media account.

On June 1, the court granted bail to Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar after they appeared in connection with the case. The court has set June 7 for Rahul Gandhi's personal appearance, rejecting his counsel's request for an exemption from appearance.

The court will hear Rahul Gandhi's case on Friday, and it remains to be seen how he will respond to the allegations made by the BJP.
