Quick Fixes or Lasting Solutions? GBA Intensifies Pothole Repairs Ahead of October 31 Deadline

With Chief Minister Siddaramaiah's October 31 deadline approaching, Bengaluru's five newly formed municipal corporations under the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) have intensified pothole-filling operations across the city. The goal is to make roads "motorable" within the next month, ensuring smoother commutes for residents.

Several major stretches in the Bengaluru City Central Corporation, including St John's Church Road, KR Circle, Race Course Road, Chalukya Circle, Mission Road, Marigowda Road, and JC Road, have already been resurfaced. These improvements were made possible as the now-dissolved BBMP had completed tendering under the Rs 694-crore action plan, according to Deccan Herald.

Key Pothole-Filling Activities Across Bengaluru

On Wednesday, pothole repairs were carried out in multiple areas, including Gear School Road, Balagere, Veerannapalya, Nagenahalli Dinne Main Road, Chamarajpet, Vasanth Nagar, Mathikere, Mysuru Road, Begur, and Uttarahalli Main Road.

Despite these efforts, several important roads are still pending, such as Hosa Road, Borewell Road, Holiday Village Road in Kanakapura, Varthur-Panathur Road, Somsundarpalya Road, Harlur-Kudlu Road, Sarjapur Road, Babusapalya Road, roads surrounding Cubbon Park, and service roads along the Outer Ring Road.

Critics have raised questions about the long-term durability of these quick fixes. Some municipal corporations are waiting for monsoon rains to subside before resuming more extensive repairs. Others acknowledge that simple resurfacing won't be sufficient, highlighting the need for comprehensive repairs, including long-neglected side drains and structural improvements to ensure lasting road quality.

While the GBA's efforts have improved key stretches, city authorities face the challenge of delivering sustainable, long-term solutions to Bengaluru's road network. Comprehensive planning, regular maintenance, and timely repairs remain crucial to prevent recurring potholes and improve traffic flow across the city.
