Kannada writer MM Kalburgi shot dead in Dharwad, Karnataka
Bengaluru, Aug 30: In a shocking incident, prominent thinker and writer Prof. M M Kalburgi was shot dead by unidentified gunmen at his residence in Dharwad, Karnataka.
Police sources say that Prof Kalburgi was shot dead by unidentified gunmen at his residence this morning.
The gunman barged into his house this morning and shot him while he was speaking on his mobile phone. He was rushed to the hospital where he was declared dead. Bullet injury marks were found on his chest and forehead.
The police suspect that the incident could be a result of the controversy that had erupted recently over his remarks on idol worship. Police officials say that they probing the matter from all angles and a manhunt has been launched to trace the gunman.
Prof Kalburgi had been warned by some for making remarks on idol worship. He had said that to prove that idols are not Gods one could urinate on them. This had led to outrage and several persons had warned him too.
Prof Kalburgi was born in Bijapur in the year 1938. He was a professor in the department of Kannada and also the former vice chancellor of the Kannada University.
