Panipuri Next? Karnataka Government Plans Ban on Cancer-Causing Ingredients
Following the discovery of cancer-causing elements in artificial colors used in Gobi Manchurian and Kebabs, the Karnataka Government has now set its sights on Panipuri. The Food Safety and Quality Department has found carcinogenic substances in the ingredients used to make the popular street food, specifically in the sauce and meetha kara powder.
The department collected samples from various locations across the state, including 49 spots in Bengaluru. Inspections revealed that some of the ingredients used in Panipuri contain elements harmful to health. Commissioner Srinivas of the Food Safety and Quality Department stated that out of 243 samples collected statewide, 41 were deemed unsafe, and 18 were of poor quality. The inspections uncovered 4-5 carcinogenic chemicals being used.

There are still a few pending test results. Once these are received, a meeting will be held to discuss a potential ban on these harmful substances. Commissioner Srinivas warned that consuming Panipuri regularly over 5-7 years could lead to serious health issues, including ulcers and cancer.
The department is considering a ban on these harmful ingredients to protect public health, with further discussions set to take place with the Minister and the Principal Secretary of the department.
