Pier 11 Marks Milestone For Bengaluru Suburban Rail Project Amidst Urgency Of Timely Completion

In a significant leap forward for the ambitious Bengaluru suburban rail project (BSRP), the first of its 400 piers, Pier 11, was successfully concreted on Friday. This achievement marks the commencement of the elevated section of Corridor-2, setting the stage for a transformative infrastructural development in the region.

P 11 (Pier 11) stands tall at an impressive height of 5.51 meters, boasting a robust foundation supported by four piles, each delving to a depth of 23 meters. For the unversed, a pier in construction and civil engineering is a vertical supporting structure primarily used to carry weight and provide stability for bridges, elevated roadways, or structures built over water or low-lying areas.

Pier 11 Marks Milestone For Bengaluru Suburban Rail Project Amidst Urgency Of Timely Completion

With just 35 months remaining until the Bangalore Suburban Railway Project (BSRP) reaches its scheduled completion, a mere 4% of the project has been accomplished thus far.

As of now, Citizens for Citizens (C4C) has highlighted that while over half, approximately 53%, of the stipulated time has passed, only about 4% of the project's work has been executed. Notably, three out of the four designated corridors remain largely untouched, prompting the group to initiate a countdown due to the project's sluggish pace. As of November 21, the timeline stands at 1,065 days for project completion.

Identifying internal organisational challenges as the primary cause for the slow progress, C4C emphasized the pressing need for a capable, hands-on, and full-time Managing Director to steer the organization toward its objectives. Addressing critical vacancies, particularly the positions of GM-Finance and GM-HR, was highlighted as an urgent necessity. C4C stressed the imperative for cohesive teamwork within K-RIDE (Karnataka Rail Infrastructure Development Company), likening it to a well-functioning, harmonised mechanism.

The group also said that there is pressing need to secure external funding, crucial to propel the progress of the delayed airport corridor. They advocated for the establishment of interim targets aligned with the overarching goal of inaugurating all four corridors by October 2026. Stressing the swift issuance of contracts for the Devanahalli to Kolara (107 km) Corridor C1, Rajanukunte to Gauribidhanuru via Doddaballapura along Corridor 4 (52 km), and Whitefield to Bangarpete along Corridor 3 (45 km), along with those for rolling stock, signaling, and telecommunication, as imperative steps to expedite the project's momentum.

The Bengaluru Suburban Rail Project (BSRP) is a sanctioned 149.348 km commuter rail network featuring 64 stations within Bangalore, Karnataka. Initially proposed in a feasibility report and the final detailed project report prepared by RITES, the project, comprising four lines or corridors, received approval for construction from Central Government in October 2020, with an estimated cost of Rs. 15,767 crore.

Scheduled for its foundation stone laying ceremony on June 20, 2022, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the project is under the implementation purview of Rail Infrastructure Development Company (Karnataka) Limited (K-RIDE), with a fixed deadline of 2026 for completion.
