Dharmasthala’s Nyaya Tradition Under Attack: Personal Vendettas Masquerading as Activism

For centuries, Dharmasthala has been more than a pilgrimage site, it has been the seat of the revered 'Nyaya' tradition, a sacred arbitration system built on fairness, trust, and community consensus. Today, that tradition is under assault from a movement that claims to champion justice but is, in reality, driven by personal grudges.

At the heart of this campaign is Mahesh Shetty Thimarodi, a fringe element who proclaims Hindu nationalism and runs a small group of cronies. Born in Ujire Village, Belthangady Taluk, Mahesh's public image is that of a crusader. Yet court records tell another story, one of repeated losses in land disputes settled under Dharmasthala's Nyaya system. These unfavourable verdicts give him not only a personal grievance but also a motive to dismantle the institution's credibility.

Mahesh's accusations, amplified by his alliance with the parents of Sowjanya in the infamous rape and murder case of 2012, have been met with skepticism and even condemnation from sections of the local community. Many allege that he is exploiting grieving families as emotional leverage, turning their tragedies into tools for monetary and political gain.

The scale of the movement raises further questions. Behind the rhetoric of 'people's justice' lies an operation with sophisticated logistics, coordinated campaigns, and resources far beyond what grassroots activism typically commands. Yet, the origin of these funds remains opaque. His refusal to undergo neutral "truth tests," instead demanding selective conditions that favour his narrative, only deepens doubts about his sincerity.

This is no longer about holding the powerful accountable. It is a calculated effort to destabilise Dharmasthala's moral authority and replace a respected justice system with the chaos of mob-led trials. If the "Land of Nyaya" succumbs to such vendetta-driven campaigns, the loss will be felt far beyond Dharmasthala - it will strike at the heart of every community that still believes truth should triumph over theatrics.
