New Law Soon? Karnataka Mulls Crackdown On Online Betting Apps

Despite the existing ban on online betting and gaming apps, many of these platforms continue to flourish-spreading rapidly even into rural parts of Karnataka. This unchecked growth has raised serious concerns about their impact on society, prompting the state government to consider introducing stricter regulations.

Minister for Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Priyank Kharge, in an interview with a local news channel, confirmed that the state government is actively discussing the introduction of new laws to tackle the issue.

He further revealed that the state government has directed the Home Minister to prepare a draft policy after consulting key stakeholders, including members of the gaming industry, legal experts, the Home Department, and the general public. "Some regulatory standards will be introduced soon," he added.

Kharge acknowledged the challenges in cracking down on these apps, particularly those operated from outside the country. "What is illegal must be banned first. If any platform is legal, we'll work on how best to regulate it," he explained.
