Whitefield-Challaghatta Purple Line Metro Set To Commence Operations From October 9: BMRCL

Namma Metro Purple Line Status: The eagerly anticipated opening of two new stretches on Bengaluru's purple metro line, namely Krishnarajapuram - Baiyappanahalli and Kengeri - Challaghatta lines, is scheduled for October 9, according to officials. Once these vital metro lines are inaugurated, the entire purple line will become fully operational, a development expected to alleviate the notorious traffic congestion in East Bengaluru.

The 2.1-kilometer Baiyappanahalli-KR Pura and the 2.05-kilometer Kengeri-Challaghatta sections will be accessible to the public starting at 5 am. These sections are part of the Purple Line, which spans 42.85 kilometers, connecting Whitefield in the east to Challaghatta in the west.

Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) offers hope for easing East Bengaluru's traffic woes after persistent delays.

P.C. Mohan, the Member of Parliament for Bangalore Central, whose constituency includes the crucial Baiyappanahalli-KR Puram metro line, confirmed this development on Sunday. He said as quoted by DH, "I personally requested the Managing Director of BMRCL to open both sections to the public without waiting for the official inauguration." An official inauguration is expected to take place later this month.

In an X post, he said, "PM Shri @narendramodi Ji has directed BMRCL to commence services on the new stretches of the #PurpleLine (Challaghatta to Kengeri and Baiyappanahalli to Whitefield), without postponing operations for a formal inauguration ceremony with VIP presence."

The line is mostly elevated, with 29 elevated stations, 5 underground stations, and 1 at-grade station. The metro journey from Challaghatta to Whitefield is estimated to take 76 minutes (approx) and cost Rs 60, according to a News 18 report.

The Commissioner for Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) has already completed inspections on both of these lines. The KR Puram - Baiyappanahalli section has already received safety clearance, and it is expected that the Kengeri - Challaghatta line will also receive CMRS approval tomorrow. The inauguration is scheduled for the following Friday.

Recently, Tejasvi Surya, the Member of Parliament for Bengaluru South, criticised the Congress party-led state government for the ongoing delays in opening the KR Puram-Baiyappanahalli metro line. He highlighted the potential benefits for thousands of daily metro commuters and expressed frustration with the government's persistent delays, despite having obtained the necessary approvals and safety clearance from CMRS.

Surya further commented, "Unfortunately, it appears that the state government is delaying the start of public operations, possibly in anticipation of a visit from either Rahul Gandhi or another Congress leader for the project's inauguration."

Previously, the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) had aimed to inaugurate the KR Puram - Baiyappanahalli line by mid-July. The completion of the purple line is expected to significantly improve public transportation in Bengaluru, particularly as it will make Whitefield more accessible, home to numerous tech parks employing people from various parts of the city. This development is also likely to alleviate traffic congestion in the Whitefield area, as more commuters will opt for the metro for their daily work commutes.
