Namma Metro Purple Metro Line Opens, PM Modi Says It's A Significant Step In Enhancing ‘Ease Of Living’
After a much-anticipated wait, the opening of two new stretches on Bengaluru's purple metro line, namely Krishnarajapuram - Baiyappanahalli and Kengeri - Challaghatta lines, is now fully operational from today i.e October 9. With the inauguration of these vital metro lines, the entire purple line is now fully operational, marking a significant development expected to alleviate the notorious traffic congestion in East Bengaluru.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday expressed his delight at the commencement of services on two key stretches of the Purple Line of the Bengaluru Metro.

Taking to X (formerly known as Twitter), PM Modi said,''Absolutely delighted by the commencement of services on two key stretches of the Purple Line of the Bengaluru Metro. This marks another significant step in enhancing 'Ease of Living' for the residents of Bengaluru.''
Calling the new Bengaluru metro line "momentous", Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri wrote on X, "For the convenience of people, services on two stretches of Purple Line of #BengaluruMetro have been started without waiting for any VIP or elaborate opening ceremony to provide seamless connectivity on the entire length from Challaghatta to Whitefield."
Replying to PM Modi tweet, Bengaluru Central MP PC Mohan wrote,''Bengaluru extends its heartfelt gratitude for your pivotal role in initiating services on the Purple Line stretches, Sir. This milestone represents a significant leap forward in augmenting the 'Ease of Living' for the residents of Bengaluru. We are immensely grateful.''
"With this, the total length of India's second largest metro rail network, India's preferred mode of green, efficient & affordable urban commute, has now increased to 73.81 kms," the union minister added to his X post.
The 2.1-kilometer Baiyappanahalli-KR Pura and the 2.05-kilometer Kengeri-Challaghatta segments is now thrown open to the public at 5 am. These segments are integral parts of the 42.85-kilometer Purple Line, which links Whitefield in the east to Challaghatta in the west.
The Metro Rail services on the two sections began at 5 am without any formal inauguration.
In an official statement, the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has announced, "BMRCL wishes to notify the public about the commencement of passenger services on two sections: the 2.10 km stretch between Krishnarajapura and Baiyappanahalli, featuring one station at Benniganahalli in between, and the 2.05 km extension from Kengeri to Challaghatta, starting from October 9."
With the inauguration of these crucial sections, the entire East-West corridor, known as the Purple Line, connecting Whitefield (Kadugodi) to Challaghatta, is now fully operational. This comprehensive line spans a total length of 43.49 km and comprises 37 metro stations, marking a significant milestone in Bengaluru's public transportation network.
BMRCL's operational network will expand from 69.66 km to 73.81 km, encompassing 66 metro stations, further enhancing the city's metro connectivity.
The line is mostly elevated, with 29 elevated stations, 5 underground stations, and 1 at-grade station. The metro journey from Challaghatta to Whitefield is estimated to take 76 minutes (approx) and cost Rs 60, according to a News 18 report.
Travel time:
According to BMRCL, the operational headway on the East-West Corridor will be as follows: Whitefield (Kadugodi) to Patandur Agrahara (10 minutes), Patandur Agrahara to Mysore Road (5 minutes), and Nadaprabhu Kempegowda Station - Majestic to MG Road (3 minutes) during morning peak hours. The travel time from Mysore Road to Challaghatta will be approximately 10 minutes.
The last train departing from Whitefield (Kadugodi) is scheduled for 10:45 pm, and from all other terminal stations, it will leave at 11:05 pm, ensuring extended service hours for commuters.

Fare:
According to media reports, the metro train ride from Whitefield (Kadugodi) to Challaghatta is expected to be priced at approximately ₹57 to ₹60.
Recently, Tejasvi Surya, the Member of Parliament for Bengaluru South, criticised the Congress party-led state government for the ongoing delays in opening the KR Puram-Baiyappanahalli metro line. He highlighted the potential benefits for thousands of daily metro commuters and expressed frustration with the government's persistent delays, despite having obtained the necessary approvals and safety clearance from CMRS.
Surya further commented, "Unfortunately, it appears that the state government is delaying the start of public operations, possibly in anticipation of a visit from either Rahul Gandhi or another Congress leader for the project's inauguration."
Previously, the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) had aimed to inaugurate the KR Puram - Baiyappanahalli line by mid-July. The purple line is expected to significantly improve public transportation in Bengaluru, particularly as it will make Whitefield more accessible, home to several tech parks employing people from various parts of the city. This development is also likely to alleviate traffic congestion in the Whitefield area, as more commuters will opt for the metro for their daily work commutes.
