Namma Metro Pink Line Opening Date: Check Route Map, Station List and More

Bengaluru's Namma Metro is rapidly expanding, with the Pink Line set to open in two phases by September 2026, according to the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL). This new corridor promises to enhance connectivity across key city areas and improve the overall commuter experience.

Pink Line Overview and Launch Schedule

The Pink Line features two main segments:

• A 7.5 km elevated stretch from Tavarekere to Kalena Agrahara along Bannerghatta Road, expected to open by March 2026.
• A 13.76 km underground section from Dairy Circle to Nagavara, passing through major hubs such as MG Road, Shivajinagar, and Tannery Road.

Civil works on the elevated segment are complete, while underground stations remain under construction. Track laying and systems integration are currently in progress for both sections.

BMRCL has begun third rail testing-a key electrification procedure-on the elevated portion between Jayadeva and Tavarekere metro stations. This testing is the first of many mandatory trials essential for safety and operational reliability. "The third rail testing is the first of many technical validations that ensure the reliability and safety of the line. Following this, we will conduct signal system validations, telecommunications network testing, and structural loading trials," said a senior BMRCL official.

Delays and Revised Timelines

The Pink Line project, initially planned for completion in 2020, faced several delays due to complex engineering challenges. The deadline was then pushed to December 2025. However, BMRCL now confirms that phased commissioning will take place in 2026.

The 7.5 km elevated section is expected to open by March 2026.

The 13.8 km underground section is projected for completion by September 2026.

Technical Challenges: Tunnelling Hurdles and Breakthroughs

Tunnelling under Bengaluru posed significant challenges, especially through dense granite and dolerite boulders, the latter being extremely resistant to excavation.

One particularly difficult segment was the 2.2 km tunnel between Shivajinagar and Vellara Junction, where progress slowed due to rocky terrain and urban congestion.

Despite this, BMRCL completed tunnelling work for the entire underground section in October 2024. Although the underground alignment is 14 km long, tunnelling covered 21 km due to the twin-bore design allowing for bi-directional train movement.

Spanning a total distance of 21.3 km, the Pink Line is a vital part of Phase 2 of Bengaluru's metro expansion. It connects Kalena Agrahara on Bannerghatta Road in the south to Nagavara on the Outer Ring Road in the north, significantly improving north-south metro connectivity.
