Namma Metro Phase-3 Project: Geotechnical Survey Kicks Off At Magadi Road

The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has officially launched the Namma Metro phase-3 project by initiating a geotechnical survey at Magadi Road. This marks a pivotal moment in the expansion of the Bangalore Metro Rail Project, aimed at enhancing the city's public transportation infrastructure, which is estimated to cost Rs 15,611 crore.

BMRCL officials have confirmed that the geotechnical survey is underway at KHB Colony, Magadi Road, where the planned Orange Line stretch of the Namma Metro will be located.

The Orange Line, also known as Namma metro Phase-3 metro line expansion will introduce two new elevated metro lines. The first line, extending 32.5 kilometers, will connect J.P. Nagar 4th Phase to Kempapura, traversing the western segment of the Outer Ring Road and featuring a total of 21 stations. The second line will span 12.5 kilometers, linking Hosahalli and Kadabagere on Magadi Road, with nine stations planned along its route. Both lines are designed as elevated tracks to alleviate congestion and improve commuting times for residents of Bengaluru, as stated by officials.

Earlier this year, the Karnataka government approved the Namma Metro phase-3. Subsequently, the Union Cabinet also approved the two corridors for the Namma Metro's Phase III project, which is estimated to cost ₹15,611 crore. The state government will bear 80%-85% of the total project expenses, while the central government will cover the remaining portion.

The geotechnical survey, valued at approximately ₹6 crore, aims to analyze the physical properties of soil and rock along the proposed metro routes. The report from this survey is expected to be completed within five months. A senior BMRCL official noted, "This investigation is essential for understanding soil stability, rock formations, and other geological factors, which will inform the depth and design of foundations needed for the metro pillars, ensuring the structural integrity of the system."

In addition, the BMRCL has begun the land acquisition process for the 44.65-kilometer Phase III project. A preliminary notification has been issued to acquire 299 properties along the Outer Ring Road stretch, which has been submitted to the Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB).

Once Namma Metro phase-3 is completed, Bengaluru's metro network will expand to a total of 220.2 kilometers.
