Namma Metro Halts NCMC Cards Over Technical Glitches; Commuters Get Free Replacements

The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has temporarily halted the issuance of National Common Mobility Cards (NCMC) at Namma Metro stations due to several commuters reporting issues with recharging and using the cards for their travel.

According to a Times of India report, the problems arose from a backend system transition when RBL Bank, the provider of NCMC cards, switched vendors. This change led to technical glitches, affecting the recharging and usability of the cards for some passengers.

To mitigate the issue, BMRCL is now issuing contactless Namma Metro cards free of charge to affected commuters. The balance from the non-functional NCMC cards is being transferred to the new cards at no extra cost.

On average, about 1,000 commuters visit Metro customer care counters daily with NCMC-related issues. Although the number of NCMC users is relatively small compared to those using tokens, QR codes, or standard smart cards, BMRCL is prioritizing the resolution to prevent further inconvenience.

Officials stated that the technical issues are expected to be resolved by April 15, after which the normal issuance and functionality of NCMC cards should resume.

Meanwhile, the Bangalore Metro and Suburban Rail Passenger's Association has urged BMRCL to address long-standing demands to improve Namma Metro commutes. In a meeting with BMRCL MD M. Maheshwar Rao, the association called for better last-mile connectivity, the introduction of the NCMC card, BMTC buses, e-rickshaws, e-scooters at key metro stations and fare discounts. They requested a 15% discount on smart cards, a 20% off-peak discount, and a monthly pass with a 35% student concession. They also demanded improved toilets and short-chassis buses to connect key commercial areas.

Disappointed with the lack of progress, the association stressed the need for swift action to boost ridership and reduce traffic congestion.
