Mandatory RO Filters, Hot Meals: New Rules For Bengaluru PGs To Combat Cholera
After two cases of cholera were identified among students at Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute (BMCRI), the PG Owners Association has alerted PG owners, as reported by Asianet Newsable. The association has provided preliminary guidelines and information, with comprehensive directives expected after an emergency meeting next week.
The guidelines focus on preventing cholera transmission, including regular sanitation of kitchens, mandatory installation of RO water filters, provision of hot meals, and monitoring residents' health. Any health changes must be promptly reported, with provisions for immediate hospitalization if cholera symptoms appear. Routine cleaning of premises, especially communal areas like kitchens, is emphasized.

The Karnataka Health Department previously issued an alert after the cholera cases at BMCRI, with two students among 47 hospitalized for symptoms such as loose stools and dehydration. Precautionary measures have been mandated to halt further spread of the disease.
According to the Karnataka Health and Family Welfare Department, six confirmed cholera cases have been reported in the state this year, with five in March. Cholera is caused by consuming contaminated food or water with the bacterium Vibrio cholerae.
Last week, 47 BMCRI students were hospitalized with similar symptoms. Dr. Padma MR from the state surveillance unit stated that two students tested positive for cholera, all showing acute gastroenteritis symptoms. While awaiting culture results for confirmation, water samples from the hostel have tested negative for cholera so far, as reported by TOI.
