Karnataka Weather Alert: Will Bengaluru See Rain Before May?

For over three months, Bengaluru, often dubbed the Indian Silicon City, has been grappling with an extended dry spell. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted no rainfall for the city in April, which is unusual. Typically, dry spells in Bengaluru last around 100-120 days, but this one has been longer than usual. Initially, the IMD predicted rainfall for Bengaluru within the week, but the latest report suggests that relief from the intense heat is unlikely anytime soon.

Combined precipitation forecasts from ECMWF and GFS indicate no rainfall expected for Bengaluru and other regions of Karnataka, except for the Ghats, over the next 10 days. The anticipated "mango showers" for April could vary in their occurrence, with certain areas witnessing them while others may not.

May Offers Hope

The good news is that significant thunderstorms are predicted for May, offering a break from the heat.

Thunderstorms are forecasted to occur predominantly in May. Throughout the upcoming week, the weather forecast indicates a mix of partly cloudy and mostly clear skies across the region. Expect mainly clear skies with temperatures ranging from 21 to 36 degrees Celsius in April.

According to the forecast website 'timeanddate,' there are 18 percent chances of rain on April 19, with predictions of around 1.5 mm of rainfall. This is followed by April 30, when over 55 percent chances of rain are forecasted, with expectations of over 6.5 mm of downpour.

Meteorologists attribute the prevailing hot and arid conditions in Bengaluru to the El Niño phenomenon, which signifies elevated temperatures in the Pacific Ocean, leading to drier-than-normal conditions in some parts of the world.

Bengaluru has not received any rainfall since 2023, extending over three months without precipitation. While January and February usually experience dry weather, March typically brings some rainfall. However, this year has seen no significant rainfall, as reported by Karnataka Weather on X (formerly Twitter).
