On May 20, the IMD has issued a yellow alert for Uttara Kannada, Dharwad, Gadag, Haveri, and Davengere, and an orange alert for Shimoga, Chitradurga, Udupi, Chikmagalur, Dakshina Kannada, and Kodagu.

The IMD issues weather alerts to inform the public and authorities about potential weather hazards. These alerts help in preparedness and mitigation efforts. For the unversed, yellow alert indicates severely bad weather, which could potentially change or intensify, but it is not currently posing an immediate threat. It serves as an early warning to keep an eye on the situation and be aware of potential adverse conditions. An orange alert is more severe than a yellow alert. It warns of very bad weather conditions that have a high likelihood of occurring. It is a call for preparedness, as it indicates the possibility of significant impact from severe weather, such as heavy to very heavy rainfall.

Looking ahead to Thursday, May 23, a yellow alert has been issued for Bengaluru Urban, Bengaluru Rural, Kolar, Ramanagara, Chamarajanagar, and Dakshina Kannada.

Over the weekend, heavy rains led to significant damage and flooding in Bengaluru. Cars and bikes were damaged in a residential complex's basement, and roads were flooded in various parts of the city. Areas like Yelahanka, Byatarayanapura, Hessarghatta Road, Hebbal, and other parts of North Bengaluru and the Central Business District (CBD) experienced severe flooding.

According to IMD data recorded from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, the HAL airport observatory recorded 22.6 mm of rainfall, while the Bengaluru city observatory recorded 8.4 mm.
