Karnataka Weather Alert: Bengaluru Grapples With Unusual February Heatwave

Breaking from the usual pattern, both Bengaluru and Hyderabad are experiencing warmer-than-average weather conditions in February. This shift in weather is attributed to the influence of El Nino and global warming.

Bengaluru, in particular, has been facing discomfort with temperatures hovering around 31 degrees Celsius since the start of February, especially during afternoons. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) in Bengaluru has warned of a potentially harsher summer compared to last year, with a possible heatwave forecasted for coastal Karnataka in early March.

Bengaluru Braces for Hotter Summer

However, Karnataka is not expected to experience a heatwave in the next seven days. The current conditions indicate that Bengaluru's average February rainfall, typically at 7mm, may be lower than usual. Dry, warm winds from the northwest are contributing to the increased heat.

Meanwhile, in Telangana, maximum temperatures are already reaching 35 degrees Celsius just one week into February. With temperatures 1-3 degrees Celsius above normal, winter seems to be ending earlier than usual, hinting at an early transition to summer with minimal spring. Notably, this winter has seen no cold wave days in Telangana, unlike previous years. This absence, coupled with rising temperatures, marks an early onset of summer for the state after five years.
