Karnataka Weather Alert: 5 Districts On Red Alert; Rain Intensity Likely to Dip After June 1

Karnataka Weather: Rains have again picked up pace on Friday morning in Mangaluru, marking an incredible May month deluge for the coastal city. The relentless downpour has triggered flooding in several areas, prompting residents to draw parallels with the devastating May 29, 2018 floods. The situation unfolding now feels eerily similar, as roads go under water and daily life is thrown out of gear.

Kundapura was battered by very heavy rain overnight, while Suratkal is witnessing steady showers at present, adding to the growing weather woes across coastal Karnataka.

Karnataka Weather Alert 5 Districts On Red Alert Rain Intensity Likely to Dip After June 1

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for five districts in Karnataka as intense monsoon activity grips the region. The affected districts include Udupi, Chikkamagaluru, Dakshina Kannada, Hassan, and Kodagu, where heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected on May 30.

Additionally, an orange alert has been issued for Uttara Kannada and Haveri districts, indicating the possibility of heavy rainfall at isolated places. Yellow alerts remain in place for the rest of the state, including Bengaluru, signaling moderate rainfall and generally cloudy conditions.

The IMD has also stated that rain intensity is expected to reduce from June 1. On that day, only Dakshina Kannada remains on yellow alert, while no warnings have been issued for the other districts.

According to a weather blogger Vijay, who runs the X handle "Namma Karnataka Weather,", today could be the last day of peak southwest monsoon activity over Karnataka. The blogger explains that the depression over northwest Bay of Bengal crossed into Bangladesh last evening and has since weakened into a low-pressure area, now drifting north. With both the Bay of Bengal system and the earlier Arabian Sea upper air circulation no longer active, Karnataka is expected to move into a moderate rainfall phase starting tomorrow. For today, however, widespread heavy rainfall is likely over Uttara Kannada, Dakshina Kannada, and Udupi. Moderate to heavy showers are expected in Kodagu, Chikkamagaluru, and Shivamogga, while Belagavi, Dharwad, Hassan, and Haveri may see light to moderate rain. The blogger also notes that rainfall over the Malnad region will begin reducing by evening as wind speeds drop and support from the Bay diminishes.

Monsoon Advances Further Across Eastern India

Meanwhile, the southwest monsoon continues to advance across eastern India, having now spread into more areas of Chhattisgarh, Odisha, the northern Bay of Bengal, the remaining northeastern states, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Sikkim.

The Northern Limit of Monsoon (NLM) currently passes through Mumbai, Ahilyanagar, Adilabad, Bhawanipatna, Puri, Sandhead Island, and up to Balurghat and beyond in West Bengal. IMD forecasts suggest further advancement into West Bengal and Bihar within the next 1-2 days.

Meanwhile, a deep depression over coastal West Bengal and adjoining Bangladesh is slowly moving north-northeastwards. Centered near Canning (India) and around 100 km west-southwest of Mongla (Bangladesh), the system is expected to weaken into a depression within 12 hours, and further into a well-marked low-pressure area over the next 24 hours.

Bengaluru Weather Forecast: Cloudy Skies and Gusty Winds

May 31: Cloudy with light to moderate rain and gusty winds
