Karnataka Rains Till May 3: IMD Warns of Thunderstorms, Hail Across 25+ Districts as More Rain Clouds Move In

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a fresh alert for Karnataka, warning of rain, thunderstorms, hail and gusty winds across more than 25 districts, with heavy rainfall expected in parts of South Interior Karnataka on April 29 and April 30. The active spell, which has already begun across Interior regions, is expected to continue till May 3 before gradually easing.

Parts of Bengaluru and several interior districts have already reported intense rainfall, signalling unstable pre monsoon conditions across the state.

As per the IMD, April 29 and April 30 will remain the most intense phase. Districts such as Hassan, Tumakuru, Mysuru, Kodagu and Chamarajanagara are likely to receive heavy rainfall along with winds reaching up to 50 kmph. The IMD has also flagged thunderstorms with hail and strong winds in districts including Dharwad, Gadag and Haveri. The weather agency has further said that light to moderate rain will continue across a wider stretch covering Bengaluru Urban, Bengaluru Rural, Kolar, Chikkaballapura, Mandya and Ramanagara, along with gusty winds.

From May 1, rainfall intensity is expected to ease slightly, although showers will continue across South Interior Karnataka including Bengaluru, Tumakuru and Chitradurga. Northern parts of the state are likely to gradually turn drier.

Independent weather tracker Namma Karnataka Weather noted that cloud activity is building up along the Tirupati to Sathyamangalam belt. In a key update, the tracker said a new rain pattern is gradually strengthening over this stretch, indicating that the ongoing spell is likely to continue across parts of Karnataka, including Bengaluru, with more showers and thunderstorms expected.

By May 2, rainfall activity will largely be restricted to southern districts such as Mysuru, Mandya, Kodagu and Ramanagara along with Bengaluru, while most other regions are expected to see relief.

On May 3, only isolated thundershowers are likely over a few districts including Kolar, Chikkaballapura and Kodagu, with most parts of Karnataka turning dry and marking the gradual end of this spell.

Bengaluru Weather

In the past 24 hours, the IMD said Bengaluru recorded heavy rainfall of 111.5 mm, accompanied by thunderstorms, gusty winds and hail in parts of the city. The IMD noted that the maximum temperature stood at 35.1°C while the minimum dropped to 18.2°C. Bengaluru Rural recorded 13 mm rainfall, with temperatures ranging between 36.8°C and 20.9°C, as per the IMD.

Looking ahead, Bengaluru is expected to continue witnessing unstable weather till at least May 4.

Thunderstorms with hail and strong winds are likely on April 30, followed by partly cloudy skies with intermittent light to moderate rain or thundershowers from May 1 to May 4. Gusty winds are expected on most days, with daytime temperatures around 35 to 36°C and night temperatures between 21 and 23°C.
