Karnataka Rain Alert: Bengaluru Sees Light Rains, IMD Predicts Wet Spell for 19 Other Districts

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather alert for Karnataka, predicting thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds across the state from today until April 6. Wind speeds are expected to reach 40-50 km/h, with varying rainfall intensity across different regions.

According to the IMD, southern interior Karnataka is likely to witness moderate rainfall, with isolated areas experiencing heavy showers. In northern interior districts, scattered to widespread moderate rain is expected today and tomorrow, along with isolated heavy rainfall in some places. However, dry weather is likely to prevail in the following days.

Bengaluru Weather Forecast: Favorable Conditions for Rains

Weather blogger Vijay, who runs the X handle 'Namma Karnataka Weather,' has predicted that Bengaluru is experiencing one of the best weather setups for thunderstorms since March 22-23.

Highlighting key meteorological parameters, he noted:

  • Relative Humidity (RH) is dense at all levels - favorable for storm development.
  • CAPE (Convective Available Potential Energy) is spiked - indicating strong convective activity.
  • Dew Point-Air Temperature Difference is at -2°C - alignment remains decent.
  • Convergence is deeper to the west - a potential limiting factor.

"Overall, conditions are looking good for thunderstorm development in and around Bengaluru this evening and night, with the possibility of scattered light to moderate showers ranging between 5mm and 40mm," he wrote on X.

Early Morning Rains Reported in Bengaluru

As of 8:55 AM, Vijay reported that light rains had stopped in several parts of the city, including:

  • Jalahalli
  • Mathikere
  • Peenya
  • R.T. Nagar
  • Mahalakshmi Layout
  • Nandini Layout

He also noted that moisture levels remain high across the southern peninsula, increasing the chances of widespread thunderstorms later in the day.

Heavy Rains Expected in Multiple Karnataka Districts

The IMD and weather bloggers predict that widespread thunderstorms and heavy rainfall are likely to impact multiple districts, including:

Chikkamagaluru, Kodagu, Shivamogga, Mysuru, Mandya, Bengaluru, Ramanagara, Kolar, Chikkaballapur, Tumakuru, Ballari, Chamarajanagar, Hassan, Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Dharwad, Uttara Kannada, Belagavi, and Haveri.

Some areas could receive moderate to heavy rainfall, with the potential for localized flooding. Authorities have advised residents to stay alert and follow official Karnataka weather updates.

The IMD has urged the public to take necessary precautions, especially in areas prone to heavy rainfall and thunderstorms. The forecast remains subject to change based on evolving weather conditions.
