Karnataka Hikes MBBS Course Fees For Private Medical Colleges By 10%

The Karnataka government has announced a 10% increase in undergraduate medical course fees at private colleges for the 2024-25 academic year.

This decision was finalised during a meeting with private medical college managements on August 17, 2024, and aims to address the rising operational costs faced by these institutions.

Under the new agreement, the fees for government quota seats in private medical colleges will increase to Rs 1,40,621, while private seats will now cost Rs 11,88,161.

This is a major change from the previous year when government quota seats were priced at Rs 1,28,746 and private seats at Rs 9,94,906.

Private colleges had initially requested a 15-20% fee hike, but the government settled on a 10% increase to balance institutional needs with affordability concerns.

Importantly, no changes have been made to the fees for government medical colleges, which remain at Rs 50,000 per year, unchanged since the 2021-22 academic year.

The fee increase for private medical colleges is seen as a necessary measure to help these institutions cope with rising costs, although discussions about seat sharing between private colleges and the government are still unresolved.

This fee hike reflects broader trends in educational costs in Karnataka, where the government recently approved a 10% increase in fees for engineering and architecture courses.

Despite pressure from private medical and dental colleges for a similar hike, the government has been cautious, aiming to balance financial viability with student accessibility.

The Karnataka Private Medical and Dental Colleges Association has raised concerns about financial difficulties due to stagnant fees over the past three years, viewing this increase as a partial measure to address these challenges.

Further discussions and decisions are expected as the government continues to review the impact on medical education.
