Karnataka Flood Alert: Balehonnuru Town Devastated By Floods As Bhadra River Overflows

Balehonnuru town in Chikkamagaluru district has been severely affected by flooding as the Bhadra River overflows. On the morning of July 31, officials opened the crest gates of the Bhadra Reservoir at Lakkavalli in Tarikere taluk, Chikkamagaluru district, Karnataka. Approximately 60,000 cusecs of water are being released to manage the high water levels.

As of the morning of July 30, the water level in the dam had reached 183 feet, just short of the full reservoir level of 186 feet. The inflow into the reservoir was recorded at 20,774 cusecs, prompting the decision to release water.

Karnataka is currently grappling with intense rainfall, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a red alert for five districts: Shivamogga, Udupi, Chikkamagaluru, Dakshina Kannada, and Kodagu. The IMD has also warned of potential landslides in 31 sub-divisions across the state.

The IMD forecasts heavy to extremely heavy rains, ranging from 64.5 mm to over 204.5 mm, over Coastal and South Interior Karnataka today. The region is expected to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall tomorrow as well. Widespread light to moderate rainfall is anticipated over Coastal Karnataka and Interior Karnataka during the next five days.

In response, a red warning (indicating 'take action') has been issued for South Interior Karnataka today, while an orange alert (indicating 'be prepared') is in effect for other parts of the state.

The monsoon's impact has been severe, with five lives lost and 106 houses completely destroyed in Dakshina Kannada alone since June. Over 100 individuals have been displaced, leading to the establishment of relief camps to provide shelter. The district has been particularly hard-hit, with schools and colleges closing on July 31 due to the adverse weather conditions. The Netravati River has also overflowed, leading to submerged houses and prompting rescue operations by the NDRF and fire brigade.

The state's major reservoirs, including KRS, Kabini, Hemavathi, and Harangi, are nearing full capacity due to the heavy rains. Authorities are managing the situation by releasing water steadily to prevent further issues.

The district administration in Dakshina Kannada has urged residents to exercise caution, avoid low-lying areas, and stay away from water bodies. Fisherfolk have been advised against venturing into the sea. The situation remains critical, with authorities closely monitoring the conditions and taking necessary steps to mitigate the impact of the heavy rainfall.
