Karnataka Dry Days Alert: Bengaluru to Ban Alcohol Sales This Week

Bengaluru will experience a two-day alcohol ban on August 15 and 16, coinciding with Independence Day and Krishna Janmashtami. This measure aims to ensure public safety and maintain peace during these significant celebrations. Bars, pubs, restaurants, and liquor stores across the city are required to comply with this restriction.

The decision for the two-day prohibition is driven by the need to uphold law and order during large gatherings expected for Independence Day and Krishna Janmashtami. Authorities are taking proactive steps to minimise potential disturbances during these events. According to Mint, all liquor outlets must adhere strictly to this ban.

Independence Day Alcohol Ban

August 15 is recognised as a mandatory dry day throughout India, prohibiting alcohol sales nationwide. This annual restriction ensures that Independence Day celebrations remain peaceful. On August 16, Krishna Janmashtami is traditionally observed as a dry day in Karnataka, although it is not compulsory in other states.

While official notifications regarding the ban are still awaited, authorities are likely to enforce it based on past practices. The aim is to prevent any disruptions during the national and religious festivities by restricting alcohol availability.

Upcoming Ganesh Chaturthi Restrictions

Ganesh Chaturthi, commencing on August 27, may also see temporary liquor restrictions in Bengaluru. This ten-day festival honours Lord Ganesha with cultural parades and musical events. The celebrations culminate in grand immersion ceremonies on September 6, known as Anantha Chaturdashi.

Although only the first day of Ganesh Chaturthi is officially designated as a dry day, there might be additional temporary bans during idol immersion processions. These measures would help manage large crowds safely. However, no official notification regarding further restrictions has been issued yet.

The Excise Department may consider imposing these temporary bans during the Visarjan processions to ensure crowd safety and smooth management of gatherings. Such measures would align with efforts to maintain order during significant public events in Bengaluru.
