Karnataka Dams On High Alert, CM Siddaramaiah Assure State Preparedness
In the aftermath of the deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, where 26 tourists were killed by Pakistani terrorists, the Indian army has retaliated with airstrikes on terrorist bases across Pakistan. This retaliatory action comes after the success of Operation Sindoor, which targeted terrorist hideouts and is now shaping a tense security situation in the region.

As a result of the escalating threats, India has entered a state of heightened security, with particular attention being paid to its critical infrastructure, including dams. In Karnataka, this has led to a series of enhanced security measures to protect key dams across the state.
Security Increased at Almatti Dam
One of the most heavily fortified locations is the Almatti Dam, located in Nidagundi Taluk, Vijayapura District. The Karnataka State Industrial Security Force (KSISF), which already oversees security at the dam, has escalated its operations by deploying a team of 86 officers, led by a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP). These officers are armed with advanced weaponry to ensure full protection of the dam.
To prevent any unauthorised access, security checks at the dam's entrance have become more stringent, with goods vehicles and large trucks being barred from entry. Additionally, CCTV surveillance has been bolstered, and 24-hour monitoring is ensured through three security shifts. There is also a heightened presence in the backwaters, with patrols carried out by boat to ensure the area remains secure.
Hemavati Reservoir Under High Alert
Similarly, the Hemavati Reservoir, located in Goruru in Hassan taluk in Karnataka, has also been placed under heightened security measures. The Industrial Security Force (ISF) has issued a high alert here, with a team of 22 officers, including police inspectors, sub-inspectors, and assistant sub-inspectors, on the ground to monitor activities closely. These officers have been instructed to stay vigilant for any aerial threats, including drone strikes or potential airstrikes, in light of the recent military actions along the India-Pakistan border.
In response to the growing concern over such threats, the Director-General of the Industrial Security Division (ISD) has outlined specific security protocols, including a detailed action plan in case of an attack on these sensitive sites. The forces are equipped with strategies to respond swiftly and efficiently to any emergency situation.
CM Siddaramaiah's Statement on Security
Addressing the concerns surrounding the state's security measures, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah assured the public in a statement made in Mandya that Karnataka's dam security had been fully upgraded. He emphasized that the government had taken all necessary precautions to protect the state's vital infrastructure and reiterated that security personnel are on high alert across all critical sites. CM Siddaramaiah also highlighted that precautionary measures have been implemented, ensuring readiness in case of any unforeseen developments.
As tensions between India and Pakistan remain high, with the possibility of further escalation, the focus on national security has intensified.
