Karnataka BJP MP Anantkumar Hegde Says Constitution Can Be Changed To Favour Hindus If NDA Wins 400 Seats

Karnataka BJP MP Anantkumar Hegde on Sunday sparked a debate after he said that the 'secular' word can be removed from the constitution to favor Hindus. Speaking at a public rally in Uttara Kannada district, BJP MP said "If all this has to be changed, it will not happen with majority votes in the Lok Sabha for Prime Minister Narendra Modi. We will need a two-thirds majority in the Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha as well as all in the state governments."

His comments were surely to spark a polarization of votes ahead of the much-anticipated Lok Sabha elections 2024.

Reiterating Prime Minister Narendra Modi's target to get 400 seats for the upcoming elections, BJP MP urged voters to give two-third of the majority to BJP-led NDA. The party has also promised to introduce the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) if voted back to power.

"If the Constitution has to be amended - the Congress fundamentally distorted the Constitution by forcefully filling unnecessary things in it, especially by bringing in laws that were aimed at suppressing the Hindu society - if all of this has to be changed, it is not possible with this (current) majority," Hegde added.

However, the BJP firmly distanced itself from the MP's comments with a tweet. "MP Ananth Kumar Hegde's remarks on the Constitution are his personal views and do not reflect the party's stance. @BJP4India reaffirms our unwavering commitment to uphold the nation's Constitution and will ask for an explanation from Hegde regarding his comments," the BJP said in a post on X.
