Karnataka Beer Sales Jump Over 18 Lakh Litres in 16 Days in April, Heatwave Spurs Demand For IML Liquor

The rising heat across Karnataka is driving more people towards chilled beer, lifting liquor sales sharply and giving the state excise department a strong start to the financial year. While the excise department has not disclosed exact revenue collections for April so far, officials say the sharp rise in sales volumes is already translating into stronger inflows.

In just the first 16 days of April, beer consumption has seen a clear spike. At the same time, Indian Made Liquor (IML) continues to hold a bigger share of the market, showing that demand remains firm across segments despite higher prices.

Karnataka's excise revenue shows a strong start to the financial year, with rising temperatures boosting beer sales by 18.25 lakh litres in early April, alongside steady Indian Made Liquor (IML) demand, indicating progress toward the state's Rs 45,000 crore target.

The Karnataka government has set an excise revenue target of Rs 45,000 crore for the year, largely to fund its five guarantee schemes. Price hikes have not slowed demand, with liquor outlets reporting steady crowds in both cities and rural areas.

Heat Drives Beer Demand

Excise data shows beer sales rising sharply as temperatures climb. Between April 1 and 16 last year, Karnataka sold 128.23 lakh litres of beer, or 16.44 lakh cases. In the same period this year, sales increased to 146.48 lakh litres, or 18.78 lakh cases.

That is a jump of 18.25 lakh litres, or 2.34 lakh cases, in just over two weeks.

Officials say the heat has played a direct role, with many consumers shifting towards beer as a cooling option during the day.

Festivals and Holidays Add to Demand

The seasonal rise in temperatures is not the only factor. A series of holidays, local fairs and temple festivals has also pushed consumption higher, especially in smaller towns and villages.

Excise officials point to wider brand availability as another reason. With multiple domestic and multinational options on shelves, consumers now have more choices, helping sustain the demand.

IML Still Leads the Market

Even with stronger beer sales, IML continues to dominate the market.

Between April 1 and 16 last year, IML sales stood at 207.36 lakh litres, or 24 lakh cases. This year, the figure rose to 216.77 lakh litres, or 25.09 lakh cases.

The increase of 9.41 lakh litres translates to a growth of 4.54 percent, showing stable demand for whisky, brandy, rum and other spirits.

Higher Prices, Same Demand

The state has raised excise duties multiple times over the past three years, pushing up liquor prices across categories. Cheaper brands have seen sharper increases, affecting price-sensitive buyers the most.

Still, there is no visible slowdown in consumption.

Bars, wine stores and retail outlets continue to see steady footfall. Within the beer segment alone, officials estimate around 15 percent growth for April compared to last year.

The early April trend points to a strong revenue flow for the excise department.

With both beer and IML sales rising, Karnataka appears on track to meet its ambitious Rs 45,000 crore target. As summer intensifies, demand is expected to remain firm, keeping collections steady in the coming weeks.
