Karnataka Bandh Over Labour Codes: Banks, Buses, Schools Affected

Bengaluru: Karnataka is bracing for a day of disruption and protest as central trade unions enforce a nationwide Bharat Bandh on Thursday, threatening to slow the state's economic and civic life to a crawl. From banks and buses to schools and offices, routine services across Bengaluru, Mysuru, Hubballi, and Mangaluru are likely to be hit.

Backed by farmer groups and Left parties, the bandh targets the Centre's four new labour codes, which unions say strike at the heart of workers' rights. Union leaders warn the protest will be forceful but peaceful, raising the likelihood of road blockades, demonstrations, and transport disruptions, especially in Bengaluru.

What Sparked Karnataka Bandh?

The flashpoint is the government's decision to roll out four labour codes, replacing 29 older labour laws. While the Centre says the reform streamlines compliance and boosts ease of doing business, trade unions argue the changes weaken job security, curb collective bargaining, and dilute social protection for millions of workers.

Ten major central trade unions-including INTUC, AITUC, CITU, HMS, SEWA, and others-have united behind the call, making Thursday's strike one of the largest coordinated labour actions in recent years.

What Will Shut, What Will Be Open During Karnatka Bandh:

As the bandh unfolds, uncertainty looms over daily life:

  • Banks, post offices, and government offices may down shutters
  • KSRTC buses and local transport could stay off the roads
  • Schools and colleges may cancel classes
  • Markets, fuel stations, and industrial units could remain closed in pockets
  • Traffic snarls are expected across Bengaluru as protesters take to key junctions.

What Stays Open

  • Despite the disruption, lifeline services will continue:
  • Hospitals, ambulances, and emergency care
  • Pharmacies and medical stores
  • Water, electricity, and fire services
  • Airports and railway operations

Private offices and online delivery platforms may function, but with thin staffing and delays.
