Kannada novelist SL Bhyrappa defends Ghar Wapsi move
Bengaluru, Jan 13: Veteran Kannada novelist SL Bhyrappa on Sunday said the initiative to bring the Dalits and tribals back under the Hindu umbrella is not wrong as they had once been forcibly converted.
Bhyrappa, 83, defended the Ghar Wapsi (return home) programme of the pro-Hindu outfits that has caused a big controversy in India's political and media circles recently.
Bhyrappa, whose works have been translated into many languages including English, told the media after a felicitation programme organised by Hoysala Karnataka Brahmins that people from other religions converted the Hindus by giving them incentives as they are backed with huge external funds.
A Hoysala Karnataka Brahmin, Bhyrappa said Brahmins should not marry people of other religions because the latter he felt are aggressive by nature and pose a threat to indigenous culture. He feared the outsiders would either destroy the temples or turn them into museums.
Bhyrappa also praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi saying his government is following a good foreign policy. He said India used to feel afraid her neighbours earlier but it is no more the case now.
