Kannada Actor Ranya Rao Confesses Use Of Hawala Money To Buy Gold

In the gold smuggling case, Kannada actor Ranya Rao on Tuesday admitted to using informal money transfer mechanisms, known as Hawala transactions. This confession became a crucial piece of evidence in the DRI's comprehensive investigation. Ranya Rao was arrested at Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport with 14.8 kg of gold valued at approximately Rs 12.56 crore.

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) also found gold jewellery worth Rs 2.06 crore and Rs 2.67 crore case from Ranya Rao's residence.

Advocate Madhu Rao, representing the DRI, initiated a judicial inquiry under Section 108 to thoroughly examine the financial irregularities surrounding the case. The judiciary's stance has been particularly stringent, with Rao's bail pleas being decisively rejected twice-first by a lower court and then by the Special Court for Economic Offences.
