Kanakapura, Mysuru Road Join Namma Metro Map: BMRCL Unveils Phase 4 Plans

Bengaluru's Namma Metro is bracing for a significant expansion, but not without raising doubts. A proposed 129 km addition in Phase 4 aims to bridge connectivity gaps in remote areas and bolster core regions, even if it strays from the city's approved Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP).

The initiative aims to address connectivity gaps in far-reaching suburban areas, a move contrary to the approved Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP), as reported by Deccan Herald.

Kanakapura, Mysuru Road Join Metro Map: BMRCL Unveils Phase 4 Plans, Expansion Heads South and East

The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has outlined plans encompassing a new line and extensions of the existing Purple and Green lines in Bidadi (Mysuru Road), Harohalli (Kanakapura Road), Attibele (Hosur Road), and Kunigal Cross (Tumakuru Road, near Nelamangala).

The proposed semicircular line intends to connect Jigani, Anekal, Attibele, Sarjapur, and Varthur, primarily focusing on the city's eastern and southern regions.

Contrary to the 2020 CMP drafted by BMRCL, these suggested lines don't align, raising concerns about adherence to the listed priorities for Phases 2A and 2B. Moreover, most routes extend beyond the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) limits, venturing into areas marked by fragmented development. BMRCL has requested state government funding for a feasibility study on these lines, aiming to assess their necessity, traffic projections, and financial viability, admitting that the CMP-listed lines should have received precedence.

Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar, also Bengaluru's development minister, appealed to Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman for funds to support various mega infrastructure projects, highlighting the metro's pivotal role in the city's rapid expansion.

This 129 km corridor, excluded from the CMP, might face rejection by the Centre. Railway enthusiast Sanjeev Dyamannavar raises concerns about extending metros to satellite towns, citing increased costs and infrastructure misalignment with primary intra-city travel goals.
