Bangalore, March 13: If rumours are to be believed, Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi will be contesting from the Chikkaballapur Lok Sabha constituency.

According to former Karnataka Chief Minister and JD(S) leader H D Kumaraswamy, Rahul will be contesting from Chikkaballapur constituency.

Kumaraswamy told TNIE, "I have received information from top sources in Congress that Rahul Gandhi is likely to contest from Amethi and Chikballapur. If Rahul choose to contest from Chikballapur, I will be JD(S) candidate from that constituency,".

And if Rahul chooses to contest from there, he would be the third in the Nehru-Gandhi family to contest from Karnataka.

Congress's positive history here

Earlier, Party president Sonia Gandhi contested the Lok Sabha elections from Bellary in 1999. Despite winning by a margin of 56,100 votes, she resigned the seat and focused on Amethi.

Indira Gandhi, too, had contested in a by-election from Chikmagalur in 1978 after she lost Rae Bareli in Uttar Pradesh in 1977 after Emergency and won the same.

Since the Gandhi family has a history of winning with large margins here in Karnataka, it could be a wise decision to field Rahul Gandhi here.

Final Decision by Congress

Sources also said that this may be one of the reasons why Veerappa Moily has not been given the Congress ticket from Chikkaballapur yet. Congress is most likely to announce the second list by Thursday.

As per BJP's list, BN Bache Gowda is BJP's candidate standing from Chikkaballapur. Aam Aadmi Party has fielded K. Arkesh from the same constituency.
