Bangalore, June 4: The state of Maharahstra has seen the demise of a number of political heavyweights in the past few years, the latest being the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) Gopinath Munde, who was sworn in as a Union minister on May 26 under the new government of Narendra Modi.
Here is a look at the politicians in Maharashtra who died since 2005.
Congress
Actor-turned-politician Sunil Dutt was a cabinet minister in the first UPA government till his death in May 2005. A five-time MP from Mumbai North West since 1984, Dutt was succeeded by his daughter Priya Dutt as the MP after his death.
BJP
Known for his organisational skills, Mahajan was fatally shot by his brother Pravin over a family dispute and passed away in a hospital 13 days later. He had held responsibility of several ministries during the Vajpayee era.
Congress
A former Union minister and chief minister of Maharashtra, Deshmukh died of multi-organ failure in a Mumbai hospital in August 2012. He was a popular face of the Congress in Maharashtra.
Shiv Sena
The founder of Shiv Sena, Bal Thackeray always played the role of the king-maker in Maharashtra politics. His party had come to power along with the BJP in the mid 1990s. Thackeray died of age-related ailments in November 2012.
BJP
A tall leader in Maharashtra politics, Munde was the deputy CM of the state between 1995-99. He was also the deputy leader of the Lok Sabha in 2009. He met an untimely death on June 3, 2014, when his car was hit by an over-speeding vehicle in New Delhi.
