HSRP Number Plate In Karnataka: Vehicle Owners Find Out Rules, Fines And More As Deadline Nears

The Karnataka Transport Department had previously extended the deadline for implementing High Security Number Plates (HSRP) in November and February of last year, but the deadline was not met for various reasons. As a result, the department has now ordered strict enforcement of HSRP before May 31. HSRP is an aluminum plate electronically registered and linked to your motor vehicle.

In August of last year, the Transport Department issued a notification making it mandatory for all vehicles registered in the state before April 1, 2019, to be fitted with HSRP. Transport officials estimate that approximately two crore vehicles in the state require high security number plates.

Despite two deadline extensions, only 34 lakh HSRPs have been registered in the state. Additional commissioner of transport (enforcement) C Mallikarjuna stated that approximately 18 lakh registrations have occurred since February, and more vehicles are yet to opt for HSRP.

Mallikarjuna explained, "We will wait until May 31 to enforce HSRP. It is expected that around 75 lakh vehicles will register for HSRP by then. Subsequently, we will appeal to the government not to extend the deadline further and to impose penalties."

He further added, "A fine of Rs 500 will be imposed initially, and Rs 1,000 thereafter if vehicle owners fail to comply with HSRP implementation. We will await the finalization of the model code of conduct and seek the government's opinion. If HSRP implementation remains unsatisfactory, we will urge the government to enforce stricter rules."

• Visit the Karnataka Transport Department website at https://transport.karnataka.gov.in or www.siam.in.
• Click the 'Book HSRP' option.
• Enter essential vehicle details, including the manufacturer.
• Choose a convenient dealer location for HSRP installation and complete the online payment (cash payments not permitted).
• Receive an OTP (One-Time Password) on the registered mobile number.
• Utilize the OTP to select a preferred date and time for HSRP installation via the website.
• Visit the vehicle manufacturer or an authorised dealer for HSRP installation. Some manufacturers provide doorstep installation services at homes and offices.
