HSRP Deadline Nears: Will You Be Fined Rs 500 From Next Week?

With less than a week left until the September 15 deadline, vehicle owners with vehicles older than 2019 must install High Security Registration Plates (HSRP) to avoid fines. Starting next week, those without HSRP will face a Rs 500 penalty.

The government and high court had previously set deadlines for HSRP installation, extending them multiple times due to low compliance. However, vehicle owners have shown little interest, prompting the state to warn that the RTO and traffic police will conduct a special drive beginning Monday.

Mallikarjun, Additional Transport Commissioner, stated, "Less than a week remains to fit HSRP plates. Of the two crore vehicles in the state that are older than 2019, only 51 lakh have installed the HSRP number plates. The remaining 1.49 crore vehicles still need to comply. The Transport Department will begin a special drive on September 16 across all districts, imposing a fine of Rs 500 for the first offense and Rs 1,000 for subsequent violations."

HSRP was introduced by the central government to standardize number plates nationwide and enhance crime detection. "Many are waiting until the last minute to book HSRP plates online. With only a week left, fines will be imposed, and traffic police will also enforce penalties," Mallikarjun added.

The Karnataka government extended the HSRP deadline from February 17 to September 15, 2024. With only 12 days remaining, many vehicle owners appear uninterested. The last extension saw just 1.8 million registrations, and although current numbers have improved, they still fall short of the total vehicles needing HSRP.
