HSRP Deadline In Karnataka: Govt Firm On May 31 Deadline
As the deadline to fix High-Security Registration Plates (HSRPs) in Karnataka is fast approaching, concerns are rising about the low rate of compliance among vehicle owners. Many citizens are eagerly awaiting updates on whether the government will extend the deadline. While the deadline was previously extended to February 17, 2024, it has now been shifted to May 31, 2024.
However, amid the ongoing elections and strict enforcement of the Code of Conduct, the government is standing firm, indicating that there will be no extension beyond the current deadline of May 31.

It should be noted that the installation of high-security registration plates (HSRPs) on vehicles registered before April 1, 2019, is progressing slowly. Approximately 35.5 lakh vehicles in Karnataka have successfully fitted HSRP number plates, while twice as many are yet to comply.
This disparity has posed challenges for the government, especially amid the election fervor, which has seen a notable decrease in HSRP bookings and adoptions. Despite a slight uptick in certain constituencies post the initial polling, regions like North Karnataka and rural areas still lag in adoption rates.
Officials are hopeful about a surge in HSRP bookings and adoptions from May 8 onwards, following the end of the third phase of Lok Sabha elections. It is anticipated that the government may consider one final extension of the deadline, given the current circumstances. However, any decision in this regard is likely to be deferred until after the Lok Sabha election results are announced on June 4, upon the lifting of the Code of Conduct.
Booking an HSRP number plate is facilitated through online portals such as www.Bookmyhsrp.com or www.siam.in. Vehicle owners are required to provide registration details, engine and chassis numbers, along with their address for booking. Following the selection of the nearest dealer, the booked HSRP plate can be collected and adopted on the designated date.
If the state government opts for another extension, the deadline could be pushed to the end of August, granting an additional three months for compliance.
Vehicle owners failing to obtain HSRPs within the stipulated deadline may incur fines or other penalties.
Citizens facing difficulties in obtaining HSRPs online can call 9449863429/9449863426 between 10 am and 5.30 am for assistance. They should visit https://transport.karnataka.gov.in or www.siam.in to provide details for HSRP registration, including the date of HSRP fitting, and the name and address of the vehicle dealer. HSRPs are considered valid only if fitted through these websites; plates fitted through other websites will be deemed unauthorized, as stated by AM Yogesh, Commissioner for Transport and Road Safety.
The HSRP requirement aims to identify all vehicles on roads, reduce vehicle-related crimes, and prevent tampering or counterfeiting of number plates.
What is HSRP?
High-Security Registration Plates (HSRP) are a specific type of vehicle number plate made from aluminum and affixed to the vehicle using non-removable locks. They feature a chromium hologram of the Ashoka Chakra, measuring 20 mm x 20 mm, hot-stamped in the top left corner of both the front and rear plates as a security measure to deter counterfeiting.
